If the unofficial end to summer has you down, come on out to the Mauch Chunk Opera House to spend some time with Old Friends, Cecilia, Mrs. Robinson and get a Rocky Mountain High to boot.
Tonight, Ted Vigil’s Tribute to John Denver takes the stage, followed on Saturday by the ever-popular Simon & Garfunkel Retrospective, with singer-songwriters, AJ Swearingen and Jonathan Beedle.
Vigil, who has an uncanny resemblance to Denver, offers some of Denver’s most familiar tunes. He performed until recently with John Denver’s former lead guitarist, Steve Weisberg, who sadly passed away recently after a brief struggle with cancer.
“I don’t know if it’s the artist, or the music, or a combination thereof, but there’s something about John Denver’s music that I’m convinced takes people more than just down memory lane,” Weisberg once said. “There’s just something about John’s music that warms the human soul.”
Saturday night’s Simon and Garfunkle Retrospective with A. J. Swearingen and Jonathan Beedle is a favorite of not only locals but folks across the country. The duo recently played onstage at Philadelphia’s Academy of Music with the Philly Pops. The classic songs are intertwined with the stories of how they came to be – sort of a Simon and Garfunkle 101.
Both shows begin at 8 PM, with doors opening at 7 PM. Tickets to each are $25 and available 24/7 on the Opera House website, www.mcohjt.com, by visiting SoundCheck Records in downtown Jim Thorpe from 10 AM to 9 PM, or by calling them at (570) 325-4009. The Opera House box office is open from noon to 5 PM, Monday through Friday at (570) 325-0249.
